Changes to Bent's Text

The Greek Island Hopping online version is NOT an exact reproduction of Bent's text. In order to make it accessible to island hoppers of today it has been deemed necessary to make a number of changes.

In the perfect world it wouldn't have been necessary to modify the original text. Unfortunately, reading the 1885 text today is apt to be a frustrating experience. Bent used poor maps drawn up in Western Europe in the 1850s or earlier - that tended to use Latin place names (now usually discarded in favour of older Greek names), and his transcriptions of Greek place names are frequently archaic (for the most part he must have been depending on local pronunciations for the names of places missing from his - often empty - maps). The result leaves modern readers scratching their heads when attempting reconcile his text with the place names on a modern map. Even with a lot of research it isn't always possible to identify some locations.

The changes can be summarized as follows:

First, over a hundred and fifty place (and occasionally - island) names have been changed to their modern equivalents, or had spellings modified - to conform to those adopted by Greek Island Hopping and the Road Editions maps of various islands). Thus Bent's use of the name 'Epanomeria' for the town on the northern tip of Santorini has been changed to its modern name of 'Oia', and the spelling of 'Pholygandros' has been updated to 'Folegandros'.

Second, occasional Greek passages / phrases have been either transcribed or removed. Finally, the sub-lines that make up the chapter descriptions at the beginning of the book have been relocated to the beginning of each chapter and reused as text sub-headings within the chapters.

The name changes in each island chapter are listed at the end of the chapter text.
